I Am Not My Own! Neither Are You!

“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.” The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.” But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.
Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. (1 Corinthians 6:13-20 NIV)

Life is not about me! This world does not revolve around me. I matter nothing to this world. Few people in a world population of billions even know I exist. Relatively few people who are even my friends, family, and acquaintances even care about me or my opinion. So no. It’s not about me, what I think or what I can do. Instead, it’s all about the One who created this world. It’s all about the One who created life. It’s all about the One who purchased salvation for us who desperately needed it. It’s all about the One who said, “Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” (Revelation 22:12-13 NIV)

True enough, this world does not revolve around me. Why? You see, I was purchased with a price. (You were too! So the world doesn’t revolve around you either.) Being purchased by the blood of Christ means that we belong to someone else. We do not belong to ourselves any longer. Christ’s atoning work transferred the deed to our lives from the dominion of the sinful nature and placed it directly into His own name. He is now our Owner, our Master, our King, our Lord. All claim to our lives that our old nature might attempt to make is false. All claim to our lives by ourselves now is rebellion and defiance, because we belong to Someone else. We were bought with a price—the price of blood—a price of the highest cost. Jesus sacrificed His own life to purchase the ownership of our lives for Himself and to offer us a place in the family of the Almighty. We ought to remind ourselves of this daily!

So what does this all mean? It means everything that we really don’t want to hear! It means that we are to honor God in all we say and do. We ought to seek to please God not only in all our actions, but also in all our thoughts and intentions. It means that we should always strive to do what is right in the eyes of God and not strive for the things can be rationalized as “OK” or “right” in our own eyes. It means that we are to live by His standards, not our own. And it means that when we fail we need to ask forgiveness and grace to try again.

Oh, but that’s so hard to do! I’d like to go out with those friends… I’d like to go to that place… I’d like to watch that… I’d like to do… I have a right to…whatever… Yes, it’s hard to separate ourselves from those things that our former owner, our selfish and sinful nature, tempts us with. But would it be worth embarrassing our new Owner after everything He’s done for us? After all, He promised that a reward is waiting for the one who overcomes! And that reward is simply out of this world!

Therefore, honor your God, my friends. And have a wonderful day in His grace!
